Job Description

The Data Engineering Manager leads a team which develops database objects and structures for data storage, retrieval, and reporting according to project specification. The position will lead and organize development team of Data Engineers to provide requirements analysis, design solutions, coding and testing services for enterprise business process, reporting and analytic solutions. We are looking for an experienced Data Engineering Manager to help manage existing data resources, implement new technologies and tooling to further enable science and analytics, as well as help drive scalable data sharing practices. In this role you will split your time between hands on development and managerial activities. You will own data environments, integrate with new technologies, and oversee the development of new processes that support new data/analytics products and services. The position will be responsible for performance management of the team including one-on-one's, performance reviews, and task prioritization. The position will be responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with our business partners and helping to formulate product development roadmaps and execution.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for managing and driving results from a team of data engineers on company defined projects and initiatives.
Responsible for the performance management of the team including but not limited to 1on1's, performance reviews, performance and goal management.
Responsible for managing risk within an organization through a reusable framework and process
Responsible for creating design patterns and best practices for data and the integration of data through the enterprise
Ensure effectiveness of the current Information Technology systems. Participate in the following:

  • Prepares database loadable files for the data warehouse
  • Applies pre-defined business transformation rules
  • Designs and develops back-end databases for business intelligence applications
  • Program, test, implement and maintain any data extraction programs necessary to extract the data
  • Designs and develops ETL processes for delivery into the data warehouse
  • Ensuring the correct application of the business rules through data query after the data is loaded into the Data Warehouse
  • Monitor loads to ensure successful completion
  • Perform Data conversion, Quality and Verification activities      
  • Perform SQL tuning for PL/SQL procedures, Views, etc
  • Create and manage daily, weekly, and monthly data operations and schedule processes
  • Identifies and Coordinates source data extraction from other operational systems
  • Participation in design sessions chaired by data stewards and/or IT personnel where decisions are made involving the transformation from source to target
  • Optimize ETL performance
  • Design various data movement load processes
  • Develop and implement the error handling strategy for ETL.
  • Understand using a distributed version control system like Git to commit code
  • Provides support to database administrators and interfaces with business users to ensure the database is satisfying business requirements. Evaluates and modifies existing technology to take into account changes in business requirements, equipment configurations, and software compliance
  • Ensures documentation is created and up to date on all projects and operational systems
  • Perform bug fixing, trouble shooting and assist in user support for existing applications

Job Specifications


  • Knowledge around designing and leading Enterprise Data Warehouse, data mart, and BI solutions
  • Well versed in the following data domains: Master Data, Operational Data, Analytical Data, Unstructured Data, and Metadata
  • Experience with Big Data concepts, technology, architectural patterns, and high throughput data pipelines (AWS, Azure, etc.)
  • Coding proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Python, Ruby, Scala, Java, etc.) 
  • Experience with various integration areas, such as data integration, application integration, business process integration, and UI integration
  • Hands on experience with data profiling tools and processes
  • Expert knowledge of normalized and dimensional modeling techniques
  • Experience with SQL Server
  • Prior experience working with data modeling repository server environment and maintaining model versions/model objects which may be common to several distinct application development efforts.
  • Mortgage industry experience is heavily preferred
  • Experience with Metadata applications and solutions
  • Business Process Management process and application experience
  • Experience with unstructured data through the design and development of content management solutions

  • Mortgage industry experience is heavily preferred.

Prior Work Experience

  • Technical:   5 - 8 years
  • Supervisory:   3 - 5 years

Education and Credentials

  • Required:    Bachelor’s Degree,  Concentration in STEM
