Job Description

Acts as the chief appraiser in conducting reviews of residential appraisals that typically collateralize loans, and acts as the licensed senior appraiser in various states for the company. Provides support in overseeing the daily operations of the Real Estate Appraisal Department. Acts as Designated Person, or Control Person for company licensing in various states as required. Resolves customer/appraisal disputes and manages the bifurcated Hybrid appraisal team, products, strategy and direction. Manages the appraisal quality control team and provides support to the Senior Appraisers and Appraisal Coordinators in managing department workflow.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establishes overall direction for the appraisal function including compliance, policies, procedures and reporting. Develops appraisal standards, guidelines and procedures consistent with sound appraisal practices.
  • Directs and supervises employees in the bifurcated hybrid appraisal production and appraisal quality control areas to consistently achieve established goals.
  • Performs complex and/or specialized appraisals
  • Analyzes and resolves appraisal disputes between client and independent contractor appraisers
  • Regularly reviews training needs among the department's employees and, at least annually, conducts training sessions with the team on new business practices, regulatory updates and appraiser profession changes.

Job Specifications


  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Eight or more years of experience in the area of real estate appraisal with active appraisal license.
  • Certified General or Certified Residential real estate appraisal license.
  • Management experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Directs and supervises employees in the bifurcated hybrid appraisal production and quality control areas.
  • Complete understanding of Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practices (USPAP) and is knowledgeable in FIRREA and applicable state and federal laws and inter-agency guidelines.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of appraisal techniques and astute professional judgment required.
  • Specialized knowledge of property and collateral appraisal methods
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills
  • Prepares and presents reports to senior management clients

People Management:

  • Will direct the production and workflow of appraisers completing  bifurcated hybrid appraisal assignments who are both Radian employees and independent contractors that could number into the hundreds.
  • Will direct the production and workflow of a supervisor of appraisal quality control and 9 other line level employees.
  • Position may be based in Pittsburgh, PA; Salt Lake City, UT or be a remote employee

Prior Work Experience

  • Technical:   8 - 10 years
  • Supervisory:   3 - 5 years

Education and Credentials

  • Required:    Bachelor’s Degree
  • Other Certifications:  Certified Residential or Certified General Appraiser
