Job Description

As the AVP, Assistant General Counsel - Mortgage you will be responsible for providing legal analysis, advice, and counsel on all assigned issues, mortgage guaranty insurance claims, and mortgage guaranty insurance policies. You will be a member of the Company’s Legal Department and provide advice and counsel to the Company’s MI Servicing Operations & Loss Management Department.

What you will do:

  • You will interpret and apply insurance policy provisions in the context of applicable contracts, servicing guides, and laws, and perform legal research and written coverage analysis.
  • You will develop appropriate content and strategy for coverage position letters to insureds and other parties.
  • You will assist in the management of coverage disputes and coverage litigation, including providing advice to business partners on discovery responses, procedural issues, trial preparation, and dispute resolution.
  • You will stay abreast of existing and developing statutes, regulations, laws, court rules and legal environment with respect to claims-related issues and practices.
  • You will develop and deliver high-quality training and educational programming for internal claims and underwriting audiences relating to any of the substantive areas for which the position is responsible.
  • You will assist the Company’s Legal Department on other assigned projects.

Who we are looking for:

  • You hold a JD from an accredited law school.
  • You must either presently be licensed to practice law and in good standing in Pennsylvania or be eligible under reciprocity rules to obtain a Pennsylvania law license within one year of hire.
  • You have 3-6 years of post-law school experience relevant to the position with the legal department of an insurance company or another company such as a lender or servicer in the residential mortgage industry, national law firm, and/or judicial clerkship. 
  • You have expert knowledge of legal issues arising in the context of one or more of the following:  insurance claims handling or coverage disputes, residential mortgage lending or servicing, and/or complex litigation. 
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills with the aptitude to work collaboratively in a team environment.
